Window-Eyes 4.2 set file for KChess Elite Version 4 (Last modified January 14, 2003) You can find the program, KChess Elite at: http://www.arkangles.com/kchess/ It is an excellent chess game for Windows 95, 98, MI, 2000, and XP and works quite well with Window-eyes. It also speaks the moves through the sound card. SEt file written with screen resolution of 800X600, high 16 bit and 256 colors, for the Modern and Classic chess pieces. Unzip the files: elite.000 elite.001 elite.002 elite.003 elite.004 elite.005 elite.006 elite.007 elite.gra elite.key elite.we winhlp32.001 and this file, elite4-readme.txt in your c:\wineyes\users\default folder. Note: Due to my personal preference, I have a few changes from the Window-eyes defaults: Hyperactive roter = control+shift+tilde Route Mouse to Window = alt+grave accent Redraw = alt+back-slash user Window Status = control+alt+grave accent time/date=control+alt+t My apologies to anyone who doesn't like these settings and has to take the time to change them. When installing KChess Elite, make sure and check the option "taylored for screen readers" mode. All the standard read window hot keys have been either undefined or changed. KChess Elite uses the hot keys, alt+0 through alt+9 for it's own speaking. elite.000 Window#1:alt+shift+s: reads the narration of the game. Window#2: control+shift+s: reads the number of the turn and whose move it is. Window#3: alt+shift+p: reads the taken pieces panel. Window#4=Alt+Shift+h reads the hint line Window#5=alt+shift+b: reads the Black player name in the default board layout (if given) Window#6=alt+shift+w: reads the white player name in the default board layout (if given) Window#7=control+shift+l: reads the status line where it says either "program waiting," "program thinking ahead," or "program searching." Window#8=alt+shift+8: reads the white player's clock in the default board layout Window#9=alt+shift+9: reads the black player's clock in the default board layout Window#10=alt+shift+t: reads the game clock in the default board layout Window #12=control+l reads the mode line, so you can double check which mode you are in. The modes will be automatically announced by some hyperactive windows. If you are using a screen resolution other than 800X600, you may have to adjust these Windows. If Window-Eyes says "graphic" where a piece should be on the board or in the taken pieces panel, try redrawing the screen. I have the redraw hot key set to alt+back slash. If that doesn't work, update the graphics with the auto label graphics hot key, insert+g and then save the graphics dictionary. Hyperactive Window #A is set to announce the turn. It has the same boundaries as Window #2 and is set to any change. Hyperactive Window B is set to say "ready" when the game is ready to be played. It is set to look for the word ready. Hyperactive Window C is set to read Window 0 when the word "resign" appears. A window pops up that gives the resignation information, I had to create another set, elite.002, to associate with this window for this hyperactive window to work. After you clear the pop-up window by hitting enter on the OK button, you will be back to elite.000. This is the only case where elite.002 will load. Hyperactive Window D reads window 11 when the word "checkmate" appears. Hyperactive Window E reads window 11 when in check. Hyperactive Window F announces Two Player Mode. Hyperactive Window G announces Play Black Mode. Hyperactive Window H announces Play White Mode. Hyperactive Window I announces Board Setup Mode. Hyperactive Window J is turned off, but when turned on it will speak the changes in window 7 automatically. If you like lots of automatic chatter, you can turn it on to hear the Program activity like, program waiting, program thinking ahead, etc. Hyperactive Window K reads window 4, the hint information. If you use the tips at start up, or choose to look at the tips, elite.003 will load and automatically read the tip, or trivia. Hyperactive Window#a is set to read Window 1 on any change and Window 1 is set to read only the tip and trivia information. elite.004 loads in the Options screen Note: I labeled the radio buttons and edit boxes/scroll bars that were possible to give unique names to, but there are some scroll bars that you have to use the mouse keys to learn exactly what it is. For example, in the Options, Display, the first scroll bar you get to will say, "scroll bar, narrowest, 16 of 40." If you route the mouse to the cursor and use the mouse up arrow keys, you will find this is a range "narrowest to widest" and if you up arrow again, you will find this is the "board edge size." Most of these scroll bars are concerning visual settings. A couple have to do with the speed at which the display refreshes, etc. elite.001 reads the About information from the help menu. elite.005 is the same as elite.000 but it loads when you use the Variation mode. elite.006 loads when KChess Elite checks for updates. elite.007 loads if there is an error when KChess Elite checks for updates. Getting Started with Kchess. If you want KChess to speak the full moves, go into the options by hitting alt+o and then go to the audio tab-control. The first set of radio buttons determine how much you want KChess to speak. Then you can select the gender of the white and black players voices. I find the easiest way to enter your moves is with the standard algebraic notation. So, if you are playing white, e2e4 would be Queen's Pawn to Queen's 4, or Queen's pawn ahead two squares. To enter your moves, just start typing the move and the edit box will open automatically. If you want to experiment with the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings, control+g. You will be on the first selection and will here "a00". This is the "company" column. If you hit the right arrow key once, you will be in the "name" column. The next right arrow will put you in the "move" column. You can also arrow up and down in any of the columns. The KChess help files are very good, just hit f1 and tab to the topic you want and hit enter. If you need to re-read the information displayed in the help window, hit alt+d. There is also a file called elite.rtf, which is all the help files in a Rich Text Format document. KChess Elite Hot Keys: alt+a=autoplay, the computer plays itself. alt+b=play black, switches you to playing black. alt+c=makes the computer play the next move, no matter whose turn it is. alt+d=undo all alt+e=comment alt+g=game info, allows you to enter information about the game. alt+i=quick hint alt+n=resign alt+o=options alt+q=rotate board alt+r=redo alt+s=stop thinking alt+t=two player mode alt+u=undo alt+v=variation alt+w=switches you to play white. alt+y=replay all alt+z=freeze game alt+1=rank 1 alt+2=rank 2 alt+3=rank 3 alt+4=rank 4 alt+5=rank 5 alt+6=rank 6 alt+7=rank 7 alt+8=rank 8 alt+9=status (which color's turn it is) alt+0=move, which repeats the last move.
