We almost didn't make it, but we had 31 days and so we squeezed it in there right at the last minute. I'm so glad you all are here. It's traditional after several years now to start out this meeting with a an update from Venkatesh, the CEO of Orbit Research. So let's just do that. Venkatesh, please unmute yourself, sir. And when you're ready, tell us exactly what's going on this month at Orbit Research. Venkatesh Chari Thanks, Robert, for hosting this call. As always, it's a pleasure to be here. Thanks everyone for joining. It has been a busy summer for us. during last month's call, I think it was right after the NFB convention and that was a hectic time. And then we had two more conventions, conferences after that, ACB and AER. Very, very good events, both of them. A lot of interest in our products. people who are really excited about our new lines and especially excited about the Orbit Flow 40, which is going to start shipping the production volumes starting really, really today. We're going to send an announcement out for people in general and also to those who have signed up on our pre-order list. So we're really excited about that. The reaction from the visitors to the booth has been really phenomenal. So super excited about that. We are also launching this week our a beta release of our chatbot. I think I might have talked about this during our previous call. So we have developed a technical support chatbot, which we call the Orbot, or Orbit Research Bot. And it is, as you might imagine AI based. We've done a lot of internal testing as well as some field testing to try to make sure that it is robust. So far indications are that it is pretty robust, but to do a beta launch just to get more feedback. It'll be available to everybody to try. It's a public beta. Certainly like to encourage everyone to give it a shot and give us feedback. The intent is to allow folks to get quick answers to questions, commonly asked questions. It's got all the information that's in our user guides as well as FAQs and some other sources of knowledge as well. So it's well grounded in it. And so it in general should not try to hallucinate an answer. If it doesn't know, it'll simply tell you that it doesn't know. In many cases, sort of reframing the question can help, but if it doesn't, if it simply doesn't have the information, it just says that it doesn't know. So we're pretty excited about that as well, and we look forward to feedback from the user community. We have also been working on various software updates. There is an update to our Orbit Reader 20 software. This is for the version that we sell in India. We have transitioned to a newer version of the library, which allows access to some of the newer tables for Indian languages. This is expected to release this week. Also software update for our Qwerty products with some additional localization support that's also planned for this week. Also for this week are updates on for the graffiti and the graffiti plus. Pretty long list of improvements and feature additions there, including for the touch functionality, the HDMI functionality, lots of really, really, really nice features that we have been able to add. On the Orbit Speak and Orbit Player, happy to announce that we will have release 2.3. in beta, basically going out tomorrow and a public release plan for next week, rather second week of September, which is essentially next week. There are a lot of improvements and changes we have essentially redone versions of the file manager, the media player, and internet radio, also a completely redesigned voice recorder. In the media player, there is, I think you'll notice, significantly improved stability and performance features such as the ability to toggle the music library feature on and off, more smooth and reliable file and folder browsing, ability to allow playback in the background for multitasking, better file handling and library management, handling the sorting by artist, song, and genre, improved support for Opus files. Pretty long list of improvements, improved search function. We've also added support for Bluetooth headset controls that's been asked for by the user community. It was part of our plan, so we've finally been able to deliver that. So play, pause, previous, and next track type of controls are now supported. In the file manager, again, improvements in stability and performance for some of the common actions such as selecting, copying, pasting, deleting, et cetera. We also add an open with feature that lets you select which app you want to use for opening a particular file. This applies more to the Orbit speak, of course. So you could, for instance, open a BRF file in the editor instead of in the book reader. Also, we've improved the performance for zipping and unzipping files. The new voice recorder application has a completely new user interface. It's been designed with some great inputs from professional audio experts in our field. It's got a file browser-like experience. It now allows you to record and save the file in any folder on the device. We've added features such as appending and inserting content in existing recording. Bookmark handling has also improved. Some serious issues have been fixed, where there was, in some cases, recorded content caused some files to get corrupted. Again, bookmark handling has been significantly improved. Voice recording playback has also been improved. And there is a bit of now flexible settings to allow you to choose your notification preferences while recording. And you can also mute and unmute the speech. We also restored the ability to open the voice recorder from anywhere on the device by pressing the record key. Also, in this release, we'll have BARD support for Orbit Speak, including proper contracted Braille entry across all of the Android apps. Also, stability fixes and other enhancements that are number of issues on Orbit Speak, where the editor sometimes was not saving files. We have been through situations where the Orbit Speak and Orbit Player units would beep unexpectedly and not respond to key presses. This has been a persistent but hard to reproduce issue for quite some time. We've finally been able to nailed down what we believe is the cause of that, and we have been able to fix it. Again, feedback from the user community would be really, really valuable. If it's still not working for you, please let us know. We have improved contracted Braille keyboard echo while typing. and also fixed an issue where the Orbit Speak was not automatically reconnecting to a smartphone when you wake up from sleep mode. We have also been working on other developments for Orbit Speak and Orbit Player. So release 2.4 will be happening in the second week of October. to about a month after 2.3. And this will include a completely new podcast application. We've spent a lot of effort to try to make it the best such application available on a Daisy player device. So lots of nice features, which we hope people will enjoy. There will also be a new book reader application with a redesigned file browser-like interface without needing to have a book library or bookshelf necessarily, a redesigned book reading experience, support for proper cursor navigation, such as by character, going to the beginning or end, features that people have been pointing out for quite some time. and we've finally been able to include these. So lots of very nice features, some long-awaited and others just brand new things that we have been able to add. There'll likely be other things as well that we will include in the October release. We'll make further announcements in the September call. So that's pretty much the update I have for now. We continue to work on the carrying case for the Orbit player. We're still expecting it to become available in the October time frame. So with that, Robert, I'll hand the microphone back to you. Robert Carter Oh, thank you, Venkatesh. My goodness, we got exciting stuff coming along here. I'm looking forward to these updates that you just described. It sounds like, honestly, it's going to be meeting a lot of people's needs and things that people have requested and I'm so glad to hear it. Because the only app that seems to be in the app catalog in the Orbit player is Bard. Are you thinking about adding any more apps? Venkatesh Chari Great question, Bobby. Thanks for bringing that up. Yes, we are actively working on other apps as well. And we'll have some more coming very shortly. As we have mentioned before, these are third-party apps, and we are trying to be as careful as we can to test them. And there are many instances where there are nuances, there are messages and screens that need to be addressed, that need to be handled. carefully. So yes, we will have more ads, more apps rather. But I just want to emphasize once again that these are really third-party apps. They pretty much come with no guarantees because we can't change those. So if an app behaves in a certain way, we aren't really in a position to modify that behavior. What we're trying to do on our side is to make sure that all essential functionality is available and does work robustly. And we try to make sure that our key-based interface works well with the app. So yes, these are coming. I think you'll be happy to see what we have in store. I'm not in a position to make commitments or name them yet, but I am fairly confident that by this time next month we'll be able to, or in next month's call, we'll be able to announce some more apps. And We'll do our very best. In certain cases, the accessibility of the existing Android app is pretty poor, which then makes it rather challenging to make it available on our platform because it simply won't work well enough. because it's even on, for instance, an Android phone, it's not going to, it doesn't work as well with TalkBack. So we are constrained by that. But that said, yes, thanks for that feedback. We'll continue to keep that at the top of our list. Robert Carter All right. Thank you, Bobby. You can actually try it even right now if any of you would like it's at orbitresearch.com slash orbot ORBOT. And you You go to that web page. It gives you a little message describing what it's able to do. And then you select a product. So let's say you had a question about the Orbit player. So you click on that menu item and then you ask it in natural language. You type in whatever question you you have, such as, how do I change volume or how do I change voice? And it will try to give you an appropriate answer. You can change the product at any time. The product list is available from the menu. There is also a feedback form. So if you experience any issues, we would really appreciate if you can drop us a couple of the issues you've been experiencing. We have tried to make the user interface as simple and intuitive as possible. So please give it a try. Speaker 4 Is this for using the PC? Is that what it is? I'm wondering in terms of the audio file support across the board for the Orbit Speak and Player podcast, the media player, of course, Book Reader, has there been any thought or have there been any requests for being able to increase the maximum audio speed of those from the, it's currently the two, two times, and perhaps being able to increase that to, you know, three, 3.5, what have you, something of that nature. And with the bot is that is it more of a one-way only kind of question and answer type of capability or what would happen if in the course of submitting a question and then this ended up being some kind of a bug or some kind of an issue that needed to be reported to Orbit Research would the tool just would the bot direct the user to write an e-mail or call or would it have the capability to report some of this directly to you in terms of like the chat conversation and such or is it more of just that one way question answer and then so the preferred path for reporting any issue is still to initiate the e-mail or the call to tech support? Thanks so much. Venkatesh Chari Thanks, Maria. Those are great questions. To take the first one, First, the increasing the recording speed. I don't personally recall getting that request, but I have made a note of it and I believe that should be possible. Speaker 6 Just to be clear, it's the playback speed. It's not recording. Venkatesh Chari Playback speed, I understand. Yes, playback. No worries, okay. Right. Yeah, recording speed would be interesting if we were to. boost that. But let me take them back to the team. I think that's great feedback. I think we, I don't know of any technical challenges with that. So thanks for that. About Orbot, so currently it is what you call the sort of one-way type of interaction. So it's, you know, you ask it a question, it gives you an answer. if you're experiencing a particular behavior, it's currently not smart enough to figure it out, oh, that's different from what's expected and therefore it's a bug and it files a bug report automatically. We certainly hope to get to that kind of nice functionality at some point. as there's a tremendous amount that can be done now with the modern AI toolkits. So we certainly plan to build upon this, but we wanted to get a simple basic version out there first that could answer quick questions. It's not intended to replace any of our current channels, So, the mailing list is still going to be a great resource. Our customer care team, accessible through phone and e-mail, is still going to be there. And we always welcome those interactions as well. but there are many occasions where you really have a quick question, you don't want to make a phone call, or you have a question outside working hours, and the hope is that you can quickly ask the bot and get a rapid answer. If you do encounter any issue with either the the chatbot itself or with your device, let's say you want to report a bug, you can use the feedback button on the Orbot page or on our tech support e-mail as well. We always welcome that. So on the speed, we have the speed question, we have Adi with us as well on the call. And perhaps he can add some further insights into how we can support that 3X speed request. Adi, do you want to share your thoughts? Adi Kushnir Hi everyone. Thanks. Robert, and thanks Maria for the question. Actually, in the new media player that's coming in 2.3, we have added that speed increase. So I think we allow 3 for sure. I'm not sure what was the maximum I kept to that, but I'll double check, but we already allow in the next update in all the media apps except, of course, the internet radio to have the speed much higher. Adi Kushnir So in the first, in version 2.3, it will only apply to the media player, internet radio and playback. during playback inside of the voice recorder in version 2.4, when the new book reader will come out, this will apply there too. Speaker 8 Okay. And the other question I had, and I've got to think about it because I've just forgotten it, was there's the volume thing. It's the volume on the audio tracks is still lower than the speech volume on the, certainly on the Orbit player. Adi Kushnir It's resolved as well in the next one. We have redone the volume mixing, so you should finally be good, I hope. Speaker 8 Okay. Oh, the other thing was, you know, you said about the recorder, you can add thing. Are there any plans to put a little basic editor in there? So if somebody sort of coughs or whatever, when you, afterward you can chop bits out. Adi Kushnir It's a good enhancement request. I think for now in the voice recorder refactoring, we have, as Venkatesh said, we have added appending things and inserting them to a file. So that's a good enhancement request for the future. Just one note about Apple Music, if we, We'll look into Prime Video, of course, specifically about Apple Music. We have tried to deliver that earlier. Apple has restricted the Apple Music app to only run on so-called Google certified devices. So that it requires a phone made full version of Android, which for various reasons we don't have. Our devices are not, like most players, are not Google certified, like many Android devices in the world are. So we are looking into ways of getting it working, but Apple Music will be, is going to take It's going to take a while. I wanted Apple Music there too, because that's what I'm subscribed to. And it was a bit of a surprise to find this out. But as for the rest, we'll definitely look into it. Speaker 9 Okay. Robert Carter All right. Thank you, Ken. I appreciate it. Good to hear from you. What was the last update for that? Venkatesh Chari The last update was, I believe, a couple of months ago. We did a release where we added more options for the vibrator intensity. So now the vibrator, the intensity can be higher for the haptic feedback. And that was the main improvement for that release. So I'll look it up as we speak. But I think that was relatively recent, I think about a month or two ago. It's not a critical release. Speaker 10 Oh, okay. It's not a critical release. Is that what you're saying? Venkatesh Chari It's not, yeah, it was not a critical release. It did not like fix any bugs or anything. Yeah, so this was released on 1st June. Speaker 10 Okay. I will go grab it. Venkatesh Chari By the way, I just want to add, Robert, if I may. So just about the Orbot, a couple of points of clarification. So it is intended as a technical support assistant and is not really intended for like sales or marketing kind of queries. So for instance, if you said, compare product X with product Y and perhaps compare product X from Orbit with product Y from someone else, it's really not set up to do that. So it's set up really to answer technical questions, usage questions about our products. So just wanted to clarify that so people have the right expectations from it. Robert Carter Okay, excellent. Brandon, please unmute and go ahead. Speaker 5 All right, my question's an interesting one. For those who may get an orbit, speak in the future. Any plans on revising the audio tutorial because I know the quick start guide mentions turning it on and using F4 holding down F4 to start the audio tutorial. Well, that was version one. Try that with version two and ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. No audio tutorial. So will that be revised or will it just be text from here on out? Venkatesh Chari So yeah, there are plans to update the audio tutorial. We are still trying to see what's the best way of doing that. One of the challenges, as is that there are fairly frequent updates, both in terms of new features we are adding, new apps, as well as changes in the usage and the behavior of the apps. So it is quite challenging for the tutorials to keep up. So we're trying to figure out what's a good way to do that. You're absolutely right. You know, version two does not have that same type of audio tutorial that version one had. And this is something that we are currently working on, trying to figure out what's the best way to do it. Speaker 5 Also, the version one tutorial will be eventually on the site since it's not as relevant as it once was, since you got the first five parts already there. Venkatesh Chari No, at the moment there are no plans to put it all on the site. There are, you know, there are some constraints that some commercial constraints there. So we, you know, other than the than what's already on the website, we would not be putting the rest of them on. Robert Carter All right. Thank you, Brandon. Dwayne, you're up next. Please unmute and go ahead when you're ready. Venkatesh Chari How's the Ultima coming along? I'm so sorry, Dwayne. I missed that. How's the Ultima coming along? The Optima. Robert Carter Yeah. Venkatesh Chari Okay, yes. The Optima is in development. We continue to work on it. We were showing at the conferences last month a model which has piezo braille cells. So what we had shown previously was a model with our own true braille cells. So we have both versions now. The development on it is continuing. We expect that next year we'll be able to launch it. So I just want to know that it's something that is active. It has been delayed and has been slowed to reasons we have discussed previously, primarily related to the funding for the effort that it involves, but it is something that we are actively pursuing. Speaker 9 How about the battery life? What's the battery life expected to be? Venkatesh Chari Battery life is expected to be a full day's working time, so somewhere between 8 and 12 hours of use. As you know, it's a regular laptop PC, right? So depending on what kinds of things you're doing on it, the battery life can vary. So if you're doing heavy duty stuff, that's sucking the battery and it'll be a little bit lower. But the expectation is that it's a full workday. Robert Carter All right. Thank you very much, Duane. Speaker 8 Just about the vibration on the, especially the Orbit speak, even if you're using it on headphones and you're in a meeting or something and you have to restart the machine or whatever, is there no possibility of having sort of a bit more discreet vibration on the thing when it starts up. Adi Kushnir We are planning to introduce control. I cannot commit to a specific version yet, but this is on our list to do to introduce the ability to fully control the vibrations and the alerts in general, not related to just vibrations. But I cannot give it an exact date yet. We have a lot at the table, but this is definitely something we have on the list to do. Speaker 8 Right. And is there a key lock on it? Like if you've got it in your pocket and you're listening to and you're listening to something with the, you know, with a Bluetooth headset when that comes out, you know, if you actually press it again, press against something like the bag you've got it in. Will we be able to lock the keys? Adi Kushnir There is on the player and there is no reason why we cannot add it to the speak. That's a good point. We can do that. Speaker 8 Okay, thank you very much. Venkatesh Chari Our other Braille products do have a key lock as well. They've had them from day one, but that's great feedback. Adi Kushnir Yeah, we can squeeze it in because it's already available on the player. It requires no further action on our end. That's a good point. Robert Carter It is a good point. And I also want to point out, I believe I am correct about this, that with the true Braille cells, you know, there's been a lot of concerns that people have had about the sound of the cells as they refresh. But I think it has gotten quieter with some of the newer products. I believe I've heard you say that, and I think that I have experienced that as well. And #3, I just want to commend you all Orbit Research and Bangkatesh and Audi and your whole support team for all the work that you're continuing to do in the development of new products and in the continuing additions to some of the products that have been around for a while. You are doing a tremendous job and you're to be commended for that and for your transparency about things, good and bad. And it's just wonderful that this company does what it does and how well it does it. And no, Venkatesh did not pay me to say that. Venkatesh Chari Thank you very much, Terry. Regarding the TrueRail cells and the sound that they make, yes, it's absolutely true that the sound has improved slightly over the past few years. We continue to make improvements on the core technology and I actually, it's a good opportunity to tell you that we are working on a method by which we would be able to achieve further improvements in the sound as well. And some of these may be even possible, we hope. hesitant to make promises yet, but we hope that they can be even applicable to those improvements may even be applicable to existing devices. So please stay tuned. I just want to reemphasize that we continue to put efforts on our existing products. It's not that we just focus on newer products. The existing products for us in the field are just as important to us. We are really happy to note that we have braille displays from the very first batch that was launched in 2016 that are still working well and still come back once in a while for things like battery replacements, sometimes for some servicing. I'm not expecting with the app, right, and using the AI features, but just literally being able to use, have them on my face and not have to worry about anything extra or off. on or in my ears on my head, what have you, and just be able to use them to hear audio files or books or whatever it may be from either of those devices, radio, podcast, what have you. So I'm wondering if you happen to know what should they in theory, even with the app not able to run on it, should they work and should the Bluetooth control in theory be able to work with those as well? Thanks. Venkatesh Chari That's a great question, Maria. I honestly do not know much about the Metaglasses myself. And I'll also ask Adi to chime in on this. But in general, if there is a way for the audio portion of the glasses to emulate a standard Bluetooth headset, then I won't see any specific reason why they should not work. But I know it's a very, very sophisticated and complex device with lots of interactions going on with the phone. So I hesitate to give a definitive answer. Avi, do you have any comments on that? It's something that we or one of our users ought to be able to check and we'll definitely see if we can get an answer to you by next month's call, Maria. Thanks for bringing it up, but I can certainly see the use case there, and I think that would be quite convenient and powerful. Robert Carter I haven't, I haven't, I don't have the Meta glasses, but I have the Echo Vision Giga glasses, and I haven't thought about trying it with one of the Orbit devices, but it does support standard Bluetooth connectivity. I don't know about the Metas, but I'll have to try it with the Echo Vision and see if that works. Speaker 6 I think they might because I think I have heard, although to be fair, it is the same parent company, but I think I had heard that the Victor Reader Stream supported the Metaglasses. So in theory, that should be a good sign for a standard, you know, interface. Those aren't using the apps either. Yeah. So we'll find out, I guess. Thanks. Venkatesh Chari Yes. Thanks.
